Independência reopens Rondônia slaughterhouse
Brazilian Meat Monitor Tuesday May 19 2009
Following a deal struck with farmers to supply cattle, slaughterhouse Independência has resumed slaughter at its unit in Rolim de Moura (Rondônia). The plant had been closed since March 25th after the company filed for bankruptcy protection.
The resumption had been set for May 22nd, initially slaughtering 500 head a day, but has now been brought forward.
"The reopening has been made possible with the backing of a commission made up of cattle farmers from the region, after Independência restated its commitment to the meat production chain and its plan to pay off its debt to farmers, other suppliers and breeders. This backing was a vote of confidence in the work done in the region and the respect shown to suppliers by Independência since 2006", says the company, in an announcement.
Independência has already opened its unit in Janaúba (Minas Gerais) and had planned to resume business in Nova Andradina (Mato Grosso) on April 30th, later scrapping the idea.
According to the companys schedule, it will present a bankruptcy recovery plan by the beginning of July, with approval expected by the beginning of October. The group owes over R$3 billion.
